Brother Vernon Payne and his wife, Sheila, joined FBC in 2012. After the Associate Pastor of Music and Education moved away in 2013, Vernon was asked to fill the position in an interim capacity until a new Music and Education Minister could be found. He is still filling the position.
Vernon and Sheila retired to Mena after Vernon had served forty years as pastor in churches in Texas and Arkansas. Sheila retired from thirty years as an elementary school teacher. Both Sheila and Vernon are graduates from Howard Payne Baptist College in Brownwood, Texas. Vernon earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Paynes have two daughters, one granddaughter who lives in their home and is a member of First Baptist, and one grandson.
